Ah-Choo! Gesundheit!

Kleenex Box Makeover!

Goodness, can you believe how ugly those Kleenex boxes are?  You go to the store needing kleenex tissue and all they have is some hideous design that clashes with your home decor!  What to do!  You need those tissues but you hate the box...

Well, here is a great solution!  Make your own Kleenex Box Cover to match your home decor or at least something that is way cuter than that ugly kleenex box design.  Today's share brings you this classic tissue box cover sporting the Eiffel Tower from one of my favorite stamp sets - Artistic Etchings.

This is my very first tissue box cover and I used this tutorial from splitcoaststampers.  I don't own any nestabilities and instead used my Circle Scissor Cutter to create the first opening for the top of the box then I "folded" the decorative top piece in half but didn't "crease" the paper and used a punch to make my opening for the tissue paper.

SunnyGirlScraps Tip(s) of the day:
  • Have you seen a Definitely Decorative Stampin' Up! Home Decor catalog lately?  The Decor Elements are an excellent way to add dimension and character to your walls or other home furnishings such as plates, mugs, platters, mirrors or frames.
  • Photography Tip for Beginners - Keep a camera with you all the time and I don't mean the camera built into your cell phone regardless of how good that camera may or may not be!
  • Photography Tip for Beginners - Make a list of the shots you would like to capture with your camera.  I've always wanted to capture a butterfly on a flower and while on vacation recently I was able to capture this photo:

Christmas Tags

Glittery Sparkling Fun!

Have you noticed how Christmas just sparkles?  When I look around at all the ornaments, wrapping paper and decorations for Christmas I find lots of glittery, sparkling fun!  There is the tinsel on the tree and twinkling lights.  If you live in a snowy region you may even have the sparkle of snow.

These tags were so much fun to make and most of them are not the same but they are similar in design.  There was lots of distressing and glitter involved.  I also did some embossing.

The background of the "Joy" tag was distressed using the Distressing Essentials kit then stamped with the En Francais background stamp on Very Vanilla cardstock.  To create the round tag shape, I had folded a piece of Very Vanilla cardstock in half then punched it out using the 2 1/2" Circle punch but made certain I left space at the fold so it would create a folded circle tag.  Then I stamped an ornament stamp from the Delightful Decorations stamp set in VersaMark then in Riding Hood Red Classic Ink followed by sprinkling Heat & Stick Powder which I heated with the Heat Gun.  After the Heat & Stick Powder was heated up, I sprinkled glitter over the ornament then reheated the Heat & Stick Powder with the Heat Gun so the glitter would stick to the design.  The snowflakes were made using the Northern Frost Big Shot Decorative Strip.  To make the snowflakes sparkle I dabbed Platinum shimmer paint on them.

For this tag, I did not distress the background but I did stamp the background using the En Francais background stamp with basic black classic ink.  The snowflake was made using the Northern Frost Big Shot Decorative Strip with a glimmer brad added in the middle.  I used black craft ink to stamp the ornament image from the Delightful Decorations stamp set then embossed it with black embossing powder which was then punched out with the ornament punch.  Both the snowflake and ornament are attached to the tag using dimensionals.  The ribbon bow is attached with a pop dot.

Overall, I made a set of 10 tags that fit nicely inside the Perfect Packaging - Terrific Tin.  Here are all ten tags that I made using the Delightful Decorations stamp set or the Tags til Christmas Stamp set.

SunnyGirlScraps Tips of the Day:

  • Craft Ink works great for embossing along with using Clear Embossing Powder.
  • If you don't have Craft Ink, you can stamp your image with versamark ink then immediately ink your stamp with your color of choice using the classic ink.
  • After you have inked your stamp with versamark and classic ink, quickly stamp your image onto your paper and sprinkle the image with your embossing powder then heat it with the Heat Gun.

Gift Box with Panache!

Stylish Gift Box!

The past few days have been absolutely crazy in the Staples household between arriving home Sunday from a weekend scrapbook retreat at the beach, then my husband rushing off to work the moment I walked into the door, Kindermusik classes and Physical Therapy for the little one.  This week has just been flying by and I feel like I haven't accomplished nearly what I was hoping to accomplish which results in some "late" nights for me after everyone else has gone to bed.

This is a project I made this past weekend while scrapbooking at the beach!  I absolutely love these beach retreats.  A friend organizes the scrapbook & crafting beach retreats by renting a beach home.  There are usually 10 to 12 friends that go.  These retreats are turning into a twice a year tradition - next retreat we may even find a massage therapist to come in and provide some massages!

As for this stylish box, I made the box using two 12x12 pieces of cardstock.  I need to add that I was making this for my Secret Pal.  Of course, she happened to be sitting across from me asking all sorts of questions about the box and what I was planning to put in the box.  Admittedly, I was avoiding most of the questions by pretending I didn't know what she was "asking" or by looking dazedly confused as a result of my drug induced haze caused by the sinus infection I was getting over.

Isn't this box beautiful with a classic style?  The background paper isn't a Christmas themed paper but I love how using a Christmas stamp set makes the box into a great gift box.  The "Top Note" design is raised using dimensionals so the Basic Black Satin Ribbon slips underneath.  As mentioned previously, I used 12x12 Cardstock with the cover being Very Vanilla and the base of the box (not shown) being Basic Black.  The depth of the sides is 3 inches.

To make the base of the box, I scored the base at THREE inches on each edge then cutting in 3 inches along ONE of the intersecting corners doing this 4 times.  Using Sticky Strip, I folded along the score line to create the box shape and used the sticky strip on the flap edges to assemble the box.

The top of the box was made using the same directions as the base of the box except I scored at 2 15/16th to make the cover easier to remove otherwise I find the cover sticks and is difficult to remove which can damage the base of the box.  With a box this beautiful, I would want to try to preserve the integrity of the box so it can be reused.

Finally, I decorated the box using the Love Letter Designer Series Paper and Riding Hood Red Cardstock on the top and each side of the cover of the box.  Adding extra decoration also creates a stronger box.  Using the Big Shot and Top Note die, I cut out the top design element using Basic Black and Very Vanilla Cardstock then I used the new Stampin' Up! Distressing kit with the charcoal dye ink and "blank" rubber stamp to add a distressed appearance to the Very Vanilla Cardstock.  I am in LOVE with the look that this distressing ink creates when used with the "blank" rubber stamp.  With some trial and error I was able to figure out what works best for me when trying to apply the distressing ink.  I also used the French Script Background Stamp to add to the "distressed look" making certain the image wasn't clear.  The last step was to stamp the tree, apply the ribbon and one button to the back of the Top Note which was then attached to the box.

SunnyGirl Tips:

  • Find time to enjoy the things that you love!
  • When using the distressing kit, lightly brush the "blank stamp" in and onto your cardstock while not worrying about the final outcome because you WANT a distressed look - not a perfect, uniform look!
  • Boxes can be a lot of fun to make.  Find a basic pattern such as a square box design and get creative with the size - Square is an easy box style to work with!

A Christmas Blessing. Rejoice!

Rejoicing in Christmas!

For unto us a Child is born,
unto us a Son is given...
                     ~  Isaiah 9:6

I love the simplicity of this beautiful stamp set found in the current Stampin' Up! Holiday mini catalog.  As I hold my son, I can only imagine the love Mary and Joseph had for their son, Jesus.  Over the Christmas season, we should strive to remember that the true meaning of Christmas is the Birth of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.  All the gifts are wonderful and definitely enjoyed.  But it is just as wonderful to be the giver of gifts.  Homemade gifts are a wonderful way to share your love.

Here is the first card I've made using this stamp set which was for the card swap at the upline meeting I attended this past Sunday.  I used the Northern Flurry Embossing Folder for the base of the card then I used a dauber to sponge Shimmer Paint over the raised image.  The snowflakes remind me of stars.  I then used the 1 1/4" striped grosgrain ribbon tied with Hemp Twine and three little jewelry tags with one stamped with the "merry" stamp from the Tiny Tags stamp set.  Finally, I stamped the image of Joseph, Mary and Baby Jesus with the Whisper White Craft Stamp and embossed using clear embossing powder.

SunnyGirlScraps Tips:

  • When embossing, remember to use the embossing buddy to help with easy removal of excess embossing powder.
  • A great way to apply shimmer paint to your projects is to shake your bottle then, using your dauber, daub inside the shimmer paint cover to pick up small amounts of the shimmer paint.  Apply to your project.
  • Rules of Composition - Fill your Frame!  When photographing subjects, try to fill the frame with the main subject.  You'll have greater impact and fewer distractions in the photo.

A Wicked Spooky Halloween

Spooky Elegance

I must admit that this was a difficult card to make especially since we don't celebrate Halloween in our family.  We prefer to focus on All Saints Day.   Even though we do not celebrate Halloween, there are many that do including my nieces.  I do make it a personal policy to not do anything overly scary.

At convention this year, I won a prize patrol and you would never guess what I won!  Yep, I won a Halloween Stamp Set and designer series paper.  Just my luck - but it was free and I will use it the best that I can!

This is the card that I made for my oldest niece.  She is enjoys feminine touches.  So I included some lace and jewels.  The black flourish jewels are so fun and add an elegant touch.  Sponging is another technique I also enjoy.

SunnyGirlScraps Tips:

  • When using the Designer Jewels Black Flourish, follow the directions!  It is key to place the transfer sheet on top of the jewels and rub hard then peel back the original backing sheet.  Peel the backing sheet off slowly.
  • Once you have used the sponge daubers with a specific color, place a label on the dauber with the ink color so you always know what color is on the dauber.
  • Rules of Composition - Texture!  Texture is a wonderful way to add interest and dimension to your photographs and projects.  When people see texture in an image they can start imagining what it feels like to touch what is in the photo.  Texture is a good idea when your taking pictures of rocks, walls, surfaces, someone’s hands, or leaves. To reveal texture in a photograph, make sure the light is coming almost exactly from the side of the surface so it creates shadows in key places.

Get Well Simplicity

Strikingly Elegant in a Simple Get Well!

Earlier this week I found out that one of my clients had been hospitalized.  With that news, I just knew I had to make her an elegant card.  This lovely lady is so wonderful and such a pleasure to be around.  We were actually planning to do a Christmas themed workshop in late September but she had to cancel because she had been sick so we decided we would try to reschedule.  Well, I was trying and trying to reach her but kept getting her voice mail.  Then I received an email from a mutual friend informing me she was in the hospital but hoping to go home in a day or two.  With that news, I set out to create a card I knew she would enjoy receiving.

This card is really simple yet looks so very elegant.  I've totally fallen head over heals in love with this card.  The base of the card is Crumb Cake then I took a piece of Real Red cardstock which I embossed using my Big Shot and Elegant Bouquet embossing folder.  For the sentiment, I used the Wellness Wishes stamp set which I colored with the Stampin' Markers for the two tone effect.  The ribbon I used is the 1 1/4 striped Real Red Grosgrain ribbon.  By the way, I LOVE the 1 1/4 striped grosgrain ribbons.  The decorative boarder around the sentiment was created by using the new Decorative Label punch - Don't you just love the effect (I think I'll be doing it more often)!  I then used the small jewelry tag punch stamped with a small image from the Tiny Tags stamp set which I tied around the ribbon using the Hemp Twine. The final touch to this card was adding three small pearls to the embossing creating a line that leads the eye up towards the sentiment.

Over the past few days I've included several tips on composition. Can you figure out what tips I've used as a guideline for creating this card?  I used a couple of those Rules of Composition.  I would like to mention that on occasion, rules are meant to be broken and no rule is ever set in stone.  The Rules of Composition are available to help guide you and get you started with your projects.

SunnyGirlScraps Tip:
  • The 1 1/4" grosgrain ribbon looks great on cards and I love highlighting the ribbon by tying a piece of hemp twine or linen thread in a bow gathering the ribbon together.
  • To add dimension with the jewelry tag, punch 3 small tags with coordinating colors and layer them together.
  • Rule of Composition - Framing!  From the view of a photographer, the world is full of objects which make perfect natural frames, such as trees, archways and holes. By placing these around the edge of the composition you help to isolate the main subject from the outside world. The result is a more focused image which draws your eye naturally to the main point of interest.  As an example in my card, I've used the Decorative Label punch to create an interesting frame around the sentiment.

Father's Day!

First Time for Father's Day!

This past Sunday was my husbands first Father's Day!  We had a very enjoyable, relaxing day starting with Church.  Admittedly, the thought crossed our mind to sleep in and skip church but I needed to work in the Nursery so we dragged ourselves out of bed and made it to church!  We were so glad to be there and enjoyed the service as is always the case.

We really didn't have any big plans for the day.  After Church, we came home for lunch which was Salmon Burgers (Yuk!) for my husband and bratwurst for me.  Mike LOVES those Salmon Burgers!  Anyway, lunch was tasty.  Caleb and I then took Mike shopping for some new work shoes along with tennis shoes.  On our shopping trip, Mike found what he needed and we also found some cute Robeez shoes for Caleb's trip to Minnesota along with a great 4th of July outfit.  I also took the opportunity to stock up on my favorite Bath & Body shower gel.

It was a wonderful Father's Day...  Of course, the one thing I forgot to do was give Mike his Father's Day card on FATHER'S DAY!  Oops...  So, I gave him his Father's Day card early Monday morning.  He really loved the card and thought it was suitably masculine :) which makes me happy.  I love the card as well.

Here is his Father's Day Card:

Summer Time Fun

Ahhhh... Summer!  Family vacations, going to the beach or the lake, taking the boat out and camping!  These are only a few of my favorite things to do during the summer months.

In just a few days, I'll be heading to Minnesota with my son, Caleb, to enjoy 3 weeks in Minnesota.  I'm really looking forward to the trip but will also miss my husband along with all the pets.  I wish Mike could have joined me for part of the time on this trip but he just doesn't have enough vacation time available yet.  But I do look forward to going on a family vacation this fall.

Well, we've had a lot of fun lately preparing for this trip but also planning for when I get back.  I will be home for 1 week before I turn around and head to Salt Lake City, UT for the Stampin' Up! Convention.  I'm so excited about going to convention.  At the end of May, I received an early copy of the new catalog.  I was able to scour the catalog and come up with ideas for Convention Swaps.  I have two swaps designed with most of the cutting complete with the plan to get them to the point where I only need to assemble them.  There is still some work to do and I'm hoping to get some Big Shot work done before I go to MN so I can bring the unfinished swaps with me to MN with plans to finish them on vacation.  My mom has actually volunteered to help!  I still want to design at least one or two more cards for swapping but we'll see if we are able to accomplish that goal.  My desire is to have around 300 to 400 cards for swapping - a lofty goal for my first time attending convention.

Just For You

Here is a fresh, bright fun card great for a "Just For You" moment.

I love Stampin' Up! and am thrilled that some of the In Colors are now becoming members of the Core Color families.  This card uses several of the current In Colors which are now going to be Core Colors.

This Card showcases the Daisy Die for the Big Shot along with the current In Colors.
